  Tharka’s comment above, I thought was lopsided and biased with which I felt rather compelled to highlight the excerpts of Tekendra’s letter dated 03 November 2008 to Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP. Who commended who, for what is insignificant and is not an issue here.

  As Tharka rightly pointed out, I don’t condone what a witness in front of the Home Affairs Select Committee has said, which clearly shows the failure of understanding of its implications but I think Tekendra’s letter added insult to the injury and perhaps inevitably added further fragility to the pre 97 case, especially for those beyond the age of 50.

  One has to wonder why the effing hell, the impact of social issues, benefits and housing problems in the UK are his concern. Why cannot he simply let the British Government deal with it if the bill for settlement is successful?

  And here I Quote what he said in his letter: “If the bill for settlement is successful and all Gurkhas are eligible how will this affect the Gurkhas who are over 60 years old? the impact on social issues, benefits, housing to name a few” End quote.

  And it’s the same group of Ex, according to his letter that has the limited proficiency of English language and skills, meaning; that they wont survive in the UK therefore my understanding from it is that they don’t deserve the right to come over too. Frankly asking, what percentage of post-97 retirees are proficient in English language and skilled?

  His figures, 12,500 over 60 years of age and 11,103 between 50 to 59 bracket is a complete imagination, the Organisations who’s been working relentlessly for almost two decades DO NOT seem to have an accurate figure of all retirees on their name list, let alone, by the age group, would therefore a junket of few days by BGWS members be sufficed to conduct a census? Will the inflated figure be advantageous for us or will it scare the hell out of Home Office review committee, remains to be seen.

  “It came late to our attention that a Home Affairs Select Committee meeting was held on 4 November 2008 to discuss Gurkha issues.

  The British Gurkha Welfare Society is the first and indeed a formidable ex Gurkha organisation to be established in the UK with over 3,000 members and increasing daily; the body that took the initial call for Gurkha service to be recognised for settlement, yet were left out. I do respect the fact it is entirely the Committee’s decision as to who is invited but as the only organisation to be fully manned by ethnic Gurkhas we seem to be alienated importantly as any policy decision on Gurkha affects us personally.

  Immediately when we learnt of the meeting I approached our MP the Rt Hon Gerald Howarth, but apparently we were informed that we cannot be invited.

  Our only concern is that the Gurkha issue is not as simple as it may appear; there is still the emotive but important issue of pension to be dealt with. If the bill for settlement is successful and all Gurkhas are eligible how will this affect the Gurkhas who are over 60 years old? the impact on social issues, benefits, housing to name a few. Facts and figures must be considered, there is a total of 36,065 Gurkhas sent on discharge, pension and redundancy since 1948 to 2008. With the new Gurkha Offer to Transfer to the Armed Forces Pension Scheme only those retiring in the future as far as 2021 onwards will reap the full benefit. The scheme though only partially favourable to 2,629 Gurkhas discharged post 1 July 1997, leaves the rest with no option.

  The settlement bill looks at 33.893 Gurkhas who were discharged prior to 1 July 1997. An estimate of 2,500 Gurkhas from this total have already been granted settlement in the UK leaving a figure of 30,936. 12,500 are over 60 years of age and 11,103 in the 50 to 59 bracket. This is the population with limited proficiency in English language and skills (please note: the figure does not account for those dead).

  I am merely attempting to convey the size and the complexities of the overall problem. Had we been given the opportunity to be heard we could have perhaps explained his in detail and our suggested solution benefiting all concerned”
